San Diego Do-Over

I've been making noises like I wouldn't be making it to San Diego Comic Con this year, but it turns out those noises were inaccurate. I'll be at the Image booth next Friday from 3:45 to 4:45. Feel free to swing by and say hello -- I'm happy to answer questions, talk shop, smile at babies, sign stuff, talk with babies, shop for questions, quest for answers, and sign babies.

    Hi! Completely off-topic (I just read your Newsarama interview from April), but: any man who favors A Fire Upon the Deep is a man after my own heart. But also, listing Supreme Commander 2 and Starfleet Command 2 under 'games you've never heard of' was a bit overly modest of you. There's a significant overlap between games and comics audiences, and Gas Powered Games aren't exactly a fringe company. Feel free to use your gaming cred a bit more.

    hi im aswad and im from malaysia. i managed to find your nonplayer no 1 and i love the art and style.
    and thank God that the story also rocks.

    i am happy to hear that you are taking the time to come out with #2. i think that is the best way to produce great art.
    i am glad you are not rushing it.

    i think the key to a great or long lasting work is taking the time to ensure the quality of the work.

    for example im a fan of the artwork of a japanese manga series called Air Gear (the story not so much but i love the manga anyway.)... this particular manga takes its time between issues and initially, i had problems waiting for the next issues... but after a while, after witnessing the artwork that came out issue after issue, i came to realized that if the artist needs the time to produce this level of art, so be it, because at the end of the day, when it comes out.. the audience or reader will benefit from the beautiful art for our mind to witness and our spirit to explore.

    so keep up the good work. and yes, it is hard to get a copy of your comic over here regardless of whatever comic distributor you may have contacted in malaysia says.
    but i am patient for the comic.
    true great art will travel far.

My last post here was in 2015. Returning to this page, I was a little surprised to discover that it was even still online, or that blogs were even still a thing. Perhaps they aren't really anymore? I have no idea. It's pretty interesting to see how many of the links on this page are now dead. The world has moved on. When last we met, I was in the late stages of learning that Nonplayer #2 was not going to provide the magic leverage to turn comics into a full time day job. Given the unsustainability of my schedule back then (drawing the comic in the wee hours of the morning while having a day job and raising a kid), it really was a hail Mary situation -- I'm not even really sure what form I thought the deus ex machina would take. Paint by Numbers

First-pass color on page 1. Click to enlarge. More after the image. Even more than with the original line art, it's taking me a long time to figure out whether something works or not. Right now, I'm mostly shooting from the hip. I know I don't want muddy color, and I'm avoiding using black for shadows. I'm trying to use new blend modes to modulate the color of the linework, itself (see leaves in background of panel 1). I'm also trying to keep all the panels on one page in the same color key (though I'm not sure I've pulled that off here). That connects to a bigger lesson I've been learning over the past month: a comic page isn't a collection of smaller drawings -- it is one big drawing, and the panel borders and speech bubbles are all part of the composition. Paths of Glory

Word balloons seem so simple in the beginning. The first time you make one in Photoshop, you just draw an oval with the Elliptical Marquee Tool. After a while, the symmetry starts to bug you, so you decide to draw your word balloons by hand with the Brush Tool. Really, really slowly. But they still look kinda crappy. Before long, word balloons have become a source of sadness in your life. Well, there's a third path. That path is Paths. Why are paths so good for word balloons? Three reasons. First, you get super-clean, super-even lines. Second, you can modify them (if you change the words -- which you will -- it's no big deal to modify the dimensions of an already-placed balloon). Third, they're reusable. You can save all your paths into a single file and use them in future pages.
